A Guide to Skiing Whistler Blackcomb
Two iconic mountains, long scenic runs, and a village full of places to warm up: Whistler Blackcomb offers plenty of ways to build your ideal ski vacation. Spend a morning finding your rhythm on groomed trails, explore a different mountain after lunch, or settle into a favourite zone and enjoy another lap. With a little planning, this enormous resort feels much easier to navigate.
Where is Whistler Blackcomb?
Whistler Blackcomb is in Whistler, British Columbia, in Canada's Coast Mountains. The resort is approximately 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Vancouver along the beautiful Sea to Sky Highway. Allow roughly two hours from downtown Vancouver or 2.5–3 hours from Vancouver International Airport, with extra time for winter weather and traffic. Airport shuttles make arriving without a car an option, too.
Whistler and Blackcomb are neighbouring mountains with separate lift networks, connected high above the valley by the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. At their bases, Whistler Village, Upper Village, and Creekside provide different places to begin your day.
A Brief History of Whistler
Whistler lies within the shared traditional territories of the Squamish Nation and Lil'wat Nation. The area's history stretches far beyond its development as a ski destination.
Whistler Mountain opened for skiing in 1966, following an effort to bring the Winter Olympics to the region. The original ski base was in what is now Creekside. Blackcomb Mountain opened in 1980, and the two mountains initially competed for skiers before coming together as one resort in the late 1990s. The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola later connected their upper slopes, and Whistler welcomed Olympic and Paralympic competition in 2010.

How To Plan Your Ski Day
Start with One Mountain
For your first day, choose the mountain most convenient to your accommodation or lesson meeting point. Give yourself time to learn a few lifts and runs before trying to cover both mountains. Book lessons and rental equipment ahead, and check exactly where your group needs to meet.
Beginners can build confidence in designated learning areas before heading farther uphill. On Blackcomb, Yellow Brick Road near the Magic Chair is a useful learning zone. On Whistler, progressing skiers can explore suitable green runs around Emerald Express, including Ego Bowl and Green Acres. Check the grooming report and ask an instructor which routes suit your ability that day.
For intermediate skiers, plan a handful of connected blue runs rather than chasing every corner of the map. Advanced skiers can use the daily opening report to identify available steeper terrain. A lesson or guided session is a useful way to discover unfamiliar areas without spending your day figuring out connections.
Use the PEAK 2 PEAK To Change Mountains
The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola connects the Roundhouse area on Whistler with the Rendezvous area on Blackcomb. The crossing takes approximately 11 minutes, letting you change mountains without descending to the village. It connects upper-mountain hubs, not the geographic summits.
Check its operating status and last crossing time before making an afternoon switch. If you need to finish on a particular mountain, leave plenty of time to return. Weather can affect lift operations, especially in exposed alpine areas.
Know Your Route Home
Before your last few runs, decide whether you are heading to Whistler Village, Upper Village, Creekside, or a property-specific ski-access route. These destinations are not interchangeable.
Long runs to the valley can be tiring, and lower-elevation conditions may differ from the snow higher up. Ask lift staff about downloading options if you prefer not to ski to the base. Beginners should be particularly cautious about choosing Creekside as a ski-down destination; it is not the simplest return route for inexperienced skiers.
Use the current trail map and live lift report throughout your visit. Follow closures and posted signs, and choose terrain based on ability and conditions rather than the view alone.
The Three Main Base Areas
Whistler Village
Whistler Village is the central hub for restaurants, shops, rentals, and lift access. The Whistler Village Gondola serves Whistler Mountain, while the nearby Excalibur Gondola provides access to Blackcomb. This is a useful meeting point for groups starting from different accommodation areas.
Upper Village and Blackcomb Base
Upper Village is home to the Blackcomb Gondola and convenient access to Blackcomb Mountain. It is especially relevant for guests staying around the Blackcomb Benchlands.
Blackcomb Peaks offers accommodation in this area, including The Aspens on Blackcomb. Check your individual listing for ski-in/ski-out access, walking routes, or shuttle options; access varies by property and snow conditions. The free Route 5 shuttle connects the Village, Blackcomb base, and Benchlands, subject to the current transit schedule.
Creekside
South of the main village, Creekside is Whistler's original ski base. The Creekside Gondola serves Whistler Mountain, making this a distinct starting point rather than another entrance to Blackcomb. Check transport options if your accommodation is in Upper Village but you plan to finish your ski day in Creekside.
Where to Eat While Skiing Whistler
On-Mountain Lunch Stops
Roundhouse Lodge, Whistler: A major dining and meeting hub in the upper mountain, with multiple food outlets. A practical choice when your group wants different lunch options.
Rendezvous Lodge, Blackcomb: Located at the top of the Blackcomb Gondola, this is a convenient place to meet, warm up, and eat before more laps or a PEAK 2 PEAK crossing.
Christine's on Blackcomb: A sit-down dining option at the Rendezvous for a longer lunch with mountain views. Check availability and reserve ahead.
Try lunch a little earlier or later than the busiest midday period, and agree on a specific meeting point inside larger lodges. Restaurant openings, menus, and access depend on the season and mountain operations.
Apres-Ski at the Base Areas
Merlin's, Upper Village: An established après-ski spot at the base of Blackcomb, convenient for finishing the day on that side of the resort. There are also several other bars and restaurants nearby.
Garibaldi Lift Co., Whistler Village: A lively slopeside option near the Whistler Village Gondola for meeting friends after the final run.
Dusty's, Creekside: A long-standing base-area favourite for barbecue and après-ski in Creekside.
For dinner, explore the village restaurants or head back to your rental for a relaxed meal together. Confirm kitchen facilities in your chosen accommodation if cooking is part of your vacation plan.
